Evaluation:
Our survey has influenced a lot of decisions we were uncertain on or wanted audience opinions on. Our first four questions exist to compare the answers of certain age ranges and genders, as well as to see how much people played games and what kind of experience they had. I used the answers of these questions to create tables on Excel and compare their answers.
We wanted to see if anyone would suggest some unique mechanics that we hadn't thought of yet which is why we asked what kind of things they'd want to see in a movement shooter. One answer mentioned mid-air dashing, which is something we hadn't considered yet and now want to add into the game as one of the abilities. One response also mentioned puzzles. I had already considered adding puzzles into the single player mode, but seeing someone suggest that makes me think it's something people would want to see, so I'm more likely to add some puzzles in at times.
We also had no idea if we should create a weapon similar to Halo, where a player can find weapons in specific areas of the map, or if we should create something like Warzone, where a player can make a loadout specific to them before the match. The overall opinion was that people wanted a mix between both. This means we'll likely allow the player to create a loadout of basic weapons such as pistols and assault rifles, and then leave them to find unique weapons such as rocket launchers and snipers in certain places around the map.
Character customization is something we wanted to add but were aware of how time consuming it may be, and wanted to confirm the audience wanted it. Over 90% of responses answered in favour of character customization, which makes it a valid thing to focus our time on.
We wanted a satisfaction factor for our game as shooters like this often have key things like ragdoll physics, or cool headshot sounds. We wanted to add most of the suggestions we put in the survey, but figured asking audience opinions would allow us to focus more specifically on one thing. The top answers were weapon mechanics and headshot sounds/hitmarkers. This means we'll be putting a large focus into making the hitmarkers feel extremely satisfying and responsive, and making satisfying mechanics such as cool reload animations, mechanics such as shotgun knockback, and more.
There was a very even split of preferred weapon types which means we'll be creating a large range of weapons for people to chose from. I want an impressive library of weapons for people to use so I won't be holding back with my designs.
Map size was also an important thing to look at and the overall opinion was that medium range maps that have a mix of enclosed corridors and open rooms seem to be preferred. I'll be testing out a range of map sizes regardless but I'll be aiming primarily to create medium sized maps for PvP.
Since 18-24 year olds will be my most likely age category to remember playing PS1 games, I wanted to tailor more to them. We found that every single one of the 18-24 responses had played Halo, which is why I want to try and recreate some Halo-esque maps to appeal more to them. We also found that under 18 and 18-24 had played a lot of Splitgate, which follows a similar map style to Halo.
